Bad weather, good training
by Bill Caloviras
Ok, if you live in the northeast, the weather this past week was partly crappy and cold!
I am a painter, and sort of as a joke, this time of year my water bottle freezes, and that is how I know when to stop painting outside!
Seriously it got cold and rainy. I stuck to it and got through the first week, I stuck to the plan up until Thursday, which is when I got this great idea to get my workout in by running to the restaurant that a couple of our friends were going to meet us at.
So, I walked 5 min, jogged 5 min, that was great, my thinking was, my wife will stop when she sees me and hopefully if I timed it right, it will be at the 30 minute mark, which is the end of my workout.
So 30 minutes go by, and no wife, so I kept on going, then I got to this very steep hill, I decided no guts no glory and started running up it. As I was 10 steps away from the top, I swore I would not stop on the hill. So I kept running, in my mind, but my body said I am walking, so I looked like a 90 year old man running slower than a mom power walking thru the mall on black Friday.
The other challenge was, that it was 30 degrees and winds up to 25mph. As I crested the hill, I had about a 5 minute down hill run to the restaurant. My wife and kids finally drove by me, I flagged them on. That was fun and a great sense of accomplishment.
The next day, I had an easy walk. Got to this one part that was flooded, had no choice but to run through or double my workout time to go back around. Needless to say, soaked feet in 30 degree weather was not fun.
What I am realizing is that every day on the road is a new challenge. I look back, on week one, I logged 13.41 miles. I feel great! I don't think I have ever run that far in one week. I know one day in the near future I will be logging more miles than that in one day as opposed to a week. but for now I will worry about the next mile I have to run, not the Marathon.
