Calories Burned Walking

Calories burned walking, Carvey's free advice on calories burned by walking!

Some people walking believe that the amount of calories burned walking is the same as jogging. But I am here to say NOT!!

Sorry...

Walking costs approximately 5 calories/minute.

Jogging costs approximately 10 calories/minute

So as you can see you will have to walk twice as long to get the same training effect as jogging.

But that's ok because eventually if you follow the tips on Carvey Running Tips you will eventually be jogging and possibly running someday in the near future.

Walking Calories Tips

  • Walking with weights, especially ankle weights is not something that I usually recommend. It may throw you off balance. It's best to add intensity to increase calories burning by walking up hills or adding some jogging to your walks.
  • The average walking speeds are:Women-3 m.p.h.Men-3.5 m.p.h.
  • Calorie burning is also based on your weight times speed of your walking. For example if your weight is 220 lbs. and you walk at a pace of 3.5 m.p.h. you will burn about 6.2 calories per minute. That adds up to 372 calories for a 60 minute walk.
  • If your weight is 110 lbs. and you walk at a pace of 3.5 m.p.h. you will be burning about 3.1 calories per minute. This adds up to 186 calories for a 60 minute walk.
  • Extra calories burned by walking can be achieved by walking faster and harder.
