New Years Resolution!

by Bill Caloviras
(Lititz, PA)

So, training during the holidays is not easy, I can come up with 100 excuses not to run and maybe one or two reasons why I should. Let's pause for a second while I hit myself over the head with an old running shoe.

I know, you can't beat yourself up for missing a day of running here or there, especially when you travel. I think that first run after a couple of days off, has got to be the most un-motivating run possible, especially in 20 degree weather with a windchill it was about 17, very gusty winds, I guess it's either punish myself with that or cozy up on the dreadmill. I will take the cold any day.

So one way to stay motivated, is to track progress, I have a nike+ sensor in my shoe, that links to my ipod, it tracks: pace, distance and time. puts it into neat little graphs that show your progress. You don't want to get too carried away by logging everything.

I personally think logging the weather has no benefit, unless you need an excuse why you were very slow that day, then you can blame it on the weather. You also don't need to log what clothes you wore that day, unless that's how you keep track of when to launder your running clothes, again pointless. As with anything you can go overboard, which in turn will become an un-motivator in the long run.

If you don't have a Nike sensor, but do have an Iphone, there is an app for that x 10. I personally like using my Nike sensor, then I found this cool website called www.dailymile.com, It is sort of a Facebook for runners, or www.livestrong.com. all have training logs you can use. Another great website, say you have no Nike + or can't afford an Iphone simply go to www.gmap-pedometer.com this is actually Google maps, but you can map your coarse out and it will tell you accurate distances that you run. You will have to figure out your pace, but there are websites that have a pace calculator.

Running shoes can be another motivator or de-motivator. Get the right kind, don't skimp on shoes. I went to the most amazing running store this past Sunday. If you live in the DC metro area go check them out www.potomacriverrunning.com or simply PR. The store associate, had me run on a treadmill, with a video camera behind me, they analyzed my gait, had me step on some pad device that showed, my balance, how high or low my arches were, etc. long story short, I was in the wrong shoes. Now I am in the right ones. My feet love me once again.

So ah back to running. some days I feel like a marathon is one of the most daunting challenges, and Coach Carvey keeps reiterating that I just need to go one mile at a time.

One of my employees, made a comment to me, he said, "how hard can it be, one of the contestants from the Biggest Loser did it, so can you. Anyway, I hope if you are reading this, that it is insightful, please leave your comments, they are much appreciated.

Sunday Run!
by: Anonymous

Sunday's forecast was cold and rainy and my schedule was a busy one, so I modified my schedule took Friday off and ran my long run on Saturday. Last week I ran a 3 mile run on Sunday, felt great, no bad pain, only a good burn. This week the plan was to up it to a 3.5 mile run. Somehow it turned into a 5 mile run. What the? Yes. My wonderful Nike sensor was uncalibrated and I figured I was running further and faster than what it was reporting. That and the fact that the loop I ran was bigger, and I had to run an extra 3/4 of a mile to get home. I feel great, so next week I may stay at 5 or go up .5 of a mile, depending on how things go this week.
On another note, from sharing my story and staying enthusiastic about my marathon, I have rubbed off on a couple of people. An old highschool friend was inspired and is signing up with two other friends as well. And an a aquintace of mine who happens to be a world class marathoner, decided he was going to pay my $130.00 marathon registration fee, and will be keeping in close contact to keep me motivated.

Just an average Joe,
by: Bill

Thanks Chris, I am just an average guy, who decided it was about time to get off my butt and do something bigger than myself. Keep in touch, my goal is to update at least once a week, if not more. My hope is that others, will get practical or entertainment value out of this, as I discover what running is all about & that seasoned runners will give advice or an occasional "back when I started......" story. Keep checking back soon, it's going to be an interesting ride, and share it with others whom you know would enjoy it too.

keep it up.

I live in WI and hate slipping on the icy sidewalks. I have a rowing machine for the indoor stuff. Dreadmill sounds about right, although I've never used one, so can't speak from experience.

I just stumbled on this web site, your journal is interesting reading. Might even inspire me to get my butt outside. Goodstuff

Ice ice Baby
by: Bill

I have yet to succomb to the hampster wheel or the dread mill, I just can't do it unless the road is snowpacked, I don't have snowshoes or ice spikes, kidding aside. I love the cold weather, it's the wind that cuts through you. I did invest In some weatherproof running gear. All purchased on eBay for 50-80% off and it was all brand new. Thanks for the support. I am excited last night felt like I was finally breaking through aerobically, I felt like it was much easier to run, faster pace, etc. Now it's about packing on the miles safely. Once again thanks for your encoraging words everyone.

What about the ice!
by: Chris

So are you going out running in the ice too? Or do you have a treadmill for the really bad days? Good luck with the training, remember to listen to your body.

HOW TO BE TOUGH LIKE COACH CARVEY
by: Anonymous

Whenever i start to baby out, "Oh its too cold, oh i'm tired, oh cold weather makes Mr. Pee pee hide, oh, oh!" I swear at myself. I call myself horrible things.

"You pathetic loser, you make me sick. You have no guts and no right to any success, why dont you take your life girly man!" I then ask my wife, Lorelie, why is she say these things about me, bah da boom!

The best way to get out there is not to think. Ive spent my whole life not thinking and look where it got me!

You run in 20 below for the same reason you take a ice pick to your eye. It feels so good when you stop.

Embrace the cold!
by: Anonymous

Being an "old" ski bum from the north east, I believe it keeps my winter running routine in perspective. First, skiers know if you have been born on a New England slope with the bullet proof ice, brutal sub-degree temps. and weather changes that baffle even the smartest meteorologists,it's gonna make you the badest "mo-fo" on skis when you hit the big time! i.e. the Rockies with perfect conditions. Second, it has educated us in the art of staying warm. Silk long underware,"Duo-fold" layers apon layers. Once this has been achieved, my psychic abilities take over and tell my body to get my ass out there because I have no excuses! The hardest part of the run is getting out the door,I stole that quote from someone?
(suprisingly not Coach Carvey!)Fast forward to mid-July,95+ heat and Humidity! Sweat is pouring from you like the washing machine hose has popped out of the drain hole in the wall. Your pace has picked up too almost a sprint! you ask yourself, what the HELL is going on?! I feel great!! Well guess what, all those brutal cold, hamstring talk'in runs are chasing you!...NOW RUN like the wind!! Remember this, our Coach Carvey is GOD, now go pray. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!......PH
