Will ankle weights increase my running speed?

QUESTION:

What do you think about using ankle weights while running? Do you think they will increase speed and/or endurance? Or, do you think they will just cause more pain and suffering in the world, and make the attornies richer? (My sense of humor is the reason your brother doesn't have to worry about competition)-who the hell is my brother, go to Coach Carvey's Bio! page

ANSWER:

I like to keep things Au Natural. That doesn't mean I want you to run nude. It's not nice to mess with Mother Nature and since I assume you were not born with weights on your ankles do not strap em on. They may cause you to run differently and that's bad. They may cause a great impact and that's bad.

If you want to increase your intensity without running faster I have the solution, hills. A hill is one great big ankle weight in a sense. Find a short hill and do repeat runs up it.

Does muscle turn to fat if you stop working out?

QUESTION

Does muscle turn to fat if you stop working out? I have heard this over and over. I am worried that I will turn into a flabby loser if I decide to stop strength training.

ANSWER

No, of course not, what are you nutz? Muscle turn to fat? It’s more likely your cat will turn into a cupcake. A better question would be,” will my car turn into a hamster if I stop driving it”?

Ok, let’s break it down. What is fat? Fat is stored energy. That’s it, no hidden agenda or super powers. Fat doesn’t care what the hell your muscles are doing unless they are asking for some energy, then it will oblige. Fat can’t change into anything. Not muscles, not farm animals and not even postage stamps.

What are muscles? Muscles are tissues that are connected to bone by way of tendons and ligaments. They couldn’t be more different than fat. If you stop working out your muscles shrink. If you stop working out you may gain fat. So some people put two and two together and come up with 6!

It’s funny that people never ask the question in reverse. Can fat turn into muscles? This question isn’t any more ridiculous than can muscles turn into fat? Very few things on the planet Earth can turn into something they are not. A caterpillar can turn into a butterfly, but if a butterfly doesn’t workout, its muscle won’t turn into fat.

Do you want to start a strength training routine? Are you a runner with strong legs and a weak upper body? Then check out my strength training for runners pages to get started.
