Running Equipment

Here is my take on running equipment. There are two kinds of runners reading this right now. They are the "We don't need STUFF runners," and the "We need Stuff runners."

Now the anti STUFF group thinks, "Hey Coach Carvey, all we need is a functioning heart, liver and lungs and we're all good to go." The Super STUFF people never actually run, they just buy lots of beautiful running attire to wear at the next family gathering. "Hey look at Sandra in her new $500.00 Armani sweat suit, she looks so athletic."

Somewhere in the middle is me, your humble host. Do you need stuff? Yes you do need some STUFF. I am here to tell you that new STUFF (new shoes, running shorts, a heart rate monitor or something as simple as a new wool cap can help to revitalize your running. Why not reward yourself with some shiny new doo-hickey after all of the miles upon miles of running.

Running Sneakers

running sneaker The cool thing about running is that you don't need a lot of running equipment. How you outfit yourself for this sport is really the number one priority.

The single most important piece of running equipment that you will need are a good pair of running sneakers. It is worth the investment to find a good fitting pair that will support you while running or jogging. Go to my running sneakers page to get some tips on fitting and buying.

A good pair of jogging shoes will help to prevent injury. And that is one of the main goals here at Carvey Running Tips. Some popular brands are, Adidas, Asics, New Balance, Reebok, Ryder, Saucony just to mention a few.

Holofiber Socks

So you have your running sneakers? Probably the next most important piece of running equipment is a great pair of socks.

Your feet should be as comfy as possible to make running a more enjoyable experience. It's best to buy socks that are specific to jogging and running as they are cushioned in all the right places and have special properties that a regular pair would not. Some well known brands for runners are Balega, Wigwam, ,and Defeet.

Jogging Clothes

You can literally run in any comfortable piece of clothing that you may have of course. That is one of the great things about running and jogging, you really don't NEED a lot of expensive equipment.

But of course as you run or jog more and more you may WANT to buy running shorts specific to running and a pair of running tights, sweats etc. Or you just may want to make a fashion statement.

Certainly some well fitting high tech clothing will help to make your runs more comfortable. Click here to get more information on jogging clothes. Gore Tex wicks away sweat from your skin and is great to wear in the winter to keep from getting chilled as you cool down.

For the "We need stuff Folks, here is a cloud of stuff to check out. Have fun!

Jogging Stroller

Jogging with your baby has become quite popular. In my case jogging with my grand baby is about to become popular, because I am now officially a Grandpa. He is three months old as of this writing(May 15th 2009). This happens to be the perfect age to start Jogging with babies.

Jogging Baby Strollers have been around since the 80's, but since then their have been many improvements. Go to my Jogging Stroller page for tips on buying and safety.

Running Accessories

If you run, jog or walk outdoors versus indoor running on a treadmill, than a pair of protective sunglasses are important as well as sunscreen. Some popular brands of glasses are Oakley, Tifosi, Ryder, and Rudy Project.

A Pedometer is a great accessory to have if you want to track how many steps you have taken during a walk, jog or run.

Another cool gadget to look into is the i pod. You can sync your runs and workouts with it and download it to your computer. I just recently heard of this and haven't tried it yet, but it sounds like a great idea.

Hydration Devices

A simple water bottle will do but can become a nuisance to carry while running and jogging. Consider a Camelbak or other back pack style water carrier. They strap to you like a back pack and have a long tube or straw to drink from. These are great for long hikes and walks.

Treadmill Tip

Investing in a large piece of running equipment like a treadmill is worth it for those of you who prefer to run indoors, and or don't want to buy a gym membership. If you live where there is harsh winter weather you will want to look into buying a decent treadmill.
