Running Knee Pain Is A Real Pain!

Running Knee Pain, Patellar Tendonitis, Illiotibial Band Syndrome, Tensor Fascia Lata. I will touch on all of the above. But please check with your physician if you do suspect the dreaded... Runner's Knee.

running_knee_pain

Pain in the knee is common among runners and joggers. Because running has become so popular there is an increase in running knee injuries.

The knee is the largest joint in the body and is very vulnerable to injury. It is less mobile than other joints and is designed to move forward and back with limited side to side movement. It is easy to twist or wrench the knee joint while running if you happen to mistep or step into a hole on the roadway or path. You can avoid some runners knee problems by warming up before your runs by walking, jogging and then running, choosing a smooth surface to run on and being extra careful when running on trails.

Some Factors That Can Lead To Symptoms of Knee Tendinitis

  • A slight deviation to alignment over time can be the cause.
  • Occasionally knee pain can be referred from hip or back, if you are out of alignment in those areas.
  • A weakness in the quadriceps or the hamstring muscles, which are responsible for controlling the knees.

    Common Running Knee Injuries

Pain at the front of the knee (Patella Tendonitis)

The quadriceps attatch to the patella tendon, which wraps around the knee and attaches to the shin bone. When the quadriceps muscles contracts they pull on the tendon which then straightens the knee.
The hamstrings are at the back of the leg and the tendon crosses behind the knee joint and attach on both sides of the knee. This muscle group bends the knee.(Check out my hamstrings from hell page)

Pain At The Outside Of The Knee (Illiotibial Band Syndrome)

Distance running can strain or tear a tendon. The Illiotibial tract also known as the Tensor Fascia Lata can be involved in a form of tendinitis where the pain is felt on the outside of the knee. It is caused by fatique of the thigh muscles which in turn puts stress on the tendon which runs from the Illiotibial Band a.k.a. the Tensor Fascia Lata. Why does it have to have so many names???

Pain On The Inside Of The Knee

Can be caused by a tear in the Cruciate Ligament either slowly over time or in a sudden fall. Sometimes this pain can be so deep inside the knee that it is hard to locate the exact spot of the injury. It is extremely painful.

By strengthening the thigh muscles you may be able to avoid some running injuries. Here is a link to my main strength training page Strength Training Routines

    Bursitis

Another source of running knee pain can be found in the bursa. The bursa are fluid filled sacks ( ewww!!!) within the knee that are there to protect your joint.

A fall to the knees can cause swelling on the bursa which in turn can cause you pain. A misalignment which can irritate the bursa could be the cause. Check with a podiatrist to see if you need inserts. A low arch or no arch could be causing the misalignment.

What To Do You Have Running Knee Pain

  • Stop running and ice. If you think it's serious call your doctor.
  • If you do suffer from a running knee pain my suggestion is to get it checked by a professional to rule out a serious injury. There are so many different injuries that sometimes it's difficult to pin point.

If you would like to know more about symptoms of tendinits or the tendinitis treatment I suggest purchasing a copy of Listen To Your Pain

  • Ice and rest immediately after you think you have sustained an injury.
  • This is just a small sampling of running knee pain and injuries that can occur: According to Listen to Your Pain by Ben E. Benjamin there are 20-35 definite injuries to the knee.

This is a book that I highly recommend if you are an active individual. In the book he explains in detail with illustrations about the inuries and how to self diagnos as well as giving you exercises for rehabilitation. An Excellent book, that I have used many times over.

Running Knee Pain - Coach Carvey Style

My experience with running knee pain is bizarre as you might have expected after reading some of my other pages here at Carvey Running Tips! Actually it had nothing to do with running. When I was 10 years old I was about to wrestle with a neighborhood boy who was twice my size. We weren't mad, it was all in good fun.

Looking back, the fact that he out weighed me by 50 lbs. should have been a clue as to what the outcome of this match would be. I clearly remember my Mom saying, “Your going to get hurt Scott”. No I won't I replied, thinking to myself how stupid can she be.

Seconds later the entire weight of this behemoth was clamped down on my knee. My knee couldn’t bend any further and his girth pushed it past it's strength. My interior cruciate ligament was literally torn in half.

Have you ever seen a big tough NFL football player hurt his knee in a game? Notice how he is racked in pain, agony on his face. It’s the worst pain I ever felt. It was worse than breaking up with my first girlfriend.

Well, they fixed it. The docs sewed it up and I’ve put about 50,000 miles on it since then. I have no knee issues now thanks to the Doc. I do have plenty of other issues but not knees.

So if you have knee problems and it's keeping you from doing what you love, like running, jogging or even walking for exercise, you may want to ask your Doc if he/she can work some magic on you.
