Spartans don't feel pain!

by Bill
(Amish Country, USA)

Last week was good, I am getting used to the cold weather. I had some pain in one of my knees, kind of scared me a little. I am used to never dosing up on pain killers. My motto is push through the pain!

Growing up in my house, unless my Dad saw bone sticking out or major blood loss, you went to school, no excuses. But in the running world, I am learning, one small pain can grow quickly and kill my chances of ever doing a marathon.

The most awkward pain I felt as I was running, no lie, my left glute, ok butt cheek cramped up, now how do you rub that cramp out on a public street without looking like a weirdo? That one, I pushed through the pain. So I am learning to listen to my body, modifying my workout and staying focused to stay on track.

I did lose a training day due to almost a foot of snow. Instead I did some "cross training" I stacked a half a chord of wood, shoveled snow and did a lot of walking at our local mall finishing my Christmas shopping.

A new goal I have in my sights, there is a 5k series, 3 races, end of Jan., Feb., and March called the frozen foot 5k. Frozen Foot ,I may or may not be ready for Jan., but definitely Feb. and Mar. I am hoping that after icing and resting, my knee will not be an issue.

I would love to hear your comments, stories or advice on how you deal with pain management during training for a big race. Best quote I heard this past week. "There are people who watch and people who do, now get out of my way" - Coach Carvey

Ice is my best advice!
by: Lorelie

Hi Bill

It sounds like a minor knee issue. If so then ice and rest should do the trick. But if it doesn't get better I would highly recommend taking a trip to the Doc's office.

My knees sometimes get tweaked too. Ice always takes care of it for me. But then again I am not training for a marathon.

Also consider seeing a chiropractor if you are not currently doing so. Sometimes a minor adjustment can help. Hope this helps. Have a Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year!!!
