National survey's say that walking to lose weight is the most popular fitness activity, followed by swimming, bicycle riding and free weights.
Longer duration, less intense activities are being recommended by trainers because they are more acceptable to people and are more likely to be a permanent change in lifestyle.
Walking has a higher compliance rate than other activities because it can be incorporated into our busy schedules and doesn't require special skills, equipment or facilities.

Walking For Weight Loss
Walking costs about 5 calories per minute; and jogging is twice that much. So your goal should be to work towards a jogging program.
Brisk walking and walking hills are a good way to challenge yourself, burn more calories and lose weight by walking.
If you are in poor physical shape than walking for weight loss is a great place to start. As you become more fit you will increase the duration, intensity and length of time walking so that you will burn more calories.

The single most important tip is to be consistent with your exercise program. You will see results if you stick to it.
Keep a walking log. It will help you to stay focused and motivate you to continue your walking program.
Try using walking music to motivate you, I personally don't listen to music, because I like to get into a rhythm of my own. Lorelie(my wife)listens to her favorite "James Brown." His lyrics are highly motivational. We are both huge fans of J.B. I'm sure you have a favorite.
Think of your walking workouts as brainstorming sessions. Walking clears your mind. Its amazing the ideas that one can come up with.
